If you want your business to succeed and if you want to retain your key employees alongside, managers must maintain management styles that not only help them maintain productivity, but improve the employee experience and employee retention rate as well.

The factors are simple. Even if you have the best people on board, as the senior manager, you must do everything in your power to maintain a good method of communication with them. Your employees are capable of doing their jobs well without needing your guidance. But they need their leader.

Sure, it’s the best option if you’re dealing with troublesome employees or are handling an emergency.

But other than that, being the old-timey boss who could double for a drill sergeant will not do you any favors. And will most likely result in people running away because of such a tough attitude.

–        No-Nonsense Style

You expect only the best from your employees. Mediocrity is not accepted or tolerated. A practical method that does encourage your employees to rise up and satisfy to your lofty expectations, this method can sometimes backfire if you end up taking the extreme approach.

This style may prompt you to let go of the weakest links, be harsh when needed, and keep your staff’s feet planted firmly on the ground.

But if not handled correctly i.e. by adding moments where your people know they’re valued, it may lead to your workers feeling demotivated and shameful when they may not be able to rise to the occasion.

–        Democratic Style

Think of it as the millennial style of management. Nothing untoward or too out there, this management style simply gives your workers the opportunity and freedom to contribute some of their ideas to the workings of the company as well. There are countless meetings and brainstorming sessions. Every person in the workforce is given the chance to help the company succeed.

Even new staffers are made to feel like they’re a part of the team and not just a group of people sitting at the kid’s table.

When handled correctly, this method allows for more organizational responsibility and flexibility. But, it does make the manager appear indecisive so the style has to be balanced well.

–        Coaching Style

It’s not just about being a good leader who gets the job done! Your workforce wants to feel like they’re working toward something. A leader who displays coaching abilities simply shows their employees that they’re doing their part in helping them perform well and to improve their skills.

With a clear purpose being to help people align their goals with that of the company’s, a ‘coach’ helps their employees recognize their true potential while allowing them to accept their weaknesses.

Yet, even this style can backfire if the employee doesn’t have the motivation to begin with. So, despite your best efforts, their performance stagnates and your time gets wasted.

–        Paternalistic Style

If you could sum it up in one phrase, it would be “family comes first”. In this case, your family is your employees.

A style that’s based on trust, this management style gives your employees the chance to be free with their opinion. Your employees feel less like workers, instead they feel valued like members of the family, who are all working toward a true goal. Sure, they don’t have a say in the company’s decision making process, but their voice is heard.

A more effective method for managing employee turnover, the paternalistic style of managing does become a problem once favoritism starts, which leads to a breakdown of hierarchical structures.
